History
The atomic number is 83 and the chemical symbol is Bi. The name derives from the German weisse masse for white mass (the name later altered to wismuth and bisemutum) from the color of its oxides. The ancients did not distinquish bismuth from lead. The French chemist Claude-Francois Geoffroy (the younger) showed that bismuth was distinct from lead in 1753.Holden, Norman E., (2004).
